PSYCHOLOGICAL EVALUATIONS sometimes called TESTING, are conducted whenever more detailed information is needed to support treatment or when another agency (like schools, the courts, or DHS Child Welfare) request help with case planning.  Sample evaluation questions are listed in the column to the right.

Many different tests may be given, depending on the concerns raised, including:

   - IQ (brief estimate or full test)

   - Achievement

   - Language Functioning

   - Adaptive Behavior

   - Personality (e.g., MMPI 2)

   - Symptom Checklist

BEFORE SCHEDULING:

I prefer to speak with parents, or whomever is referring someone for testing, to review the questions they want addressed.  Estimates of time needed, billing issues, and how the material will be shared with others are best clarified before the testing begins.

WRITTEN REPORTS:

My goal is to mail the report within 2 weeks of the completing all testing.  This time may be increased if there is a delay in gathering prior treatment, educational, or medical records needed for review as part of the assessment.

Sample Reasons to Complete a Psychological Evaluation:

-  Previous treatment efforts have been less successful than expected and details about diagnosis or specific areas of weaknesses and strengths are needed.

-  School placement is a concern, either for early entry into kindergarten, special education placement, or behavioral problems.  (Note, these evaluations are not covered by insurance.)

-  School reports you son or daughter made a threat or otherwise was believed to present a risk to others at school.  An evaluation may be required before they are released to return to school.  (These evaluations are generally paid for by the school district and require a specific referral from a principal.)

-  Juvenile Court has become involved with a child, either due to suspected abuse or delinquent behavior.  Private attorneys and DYS or Child Welfare may request an assessment of the child or their parents.

-  DHS Child Welfare is seeking to terminate parental rights.  Private attorneys or the state may request an evaluation for use by the court in this proceeding.
